The Collective Defenseurs Plus launches its umpteenth alarm cry on the deteriorating situation of the inhabitants of Cité Soleil and the scarcity of fuel

The Collectif Défenseurs Plus, an organization that defends the rights of the human person, states that since Friday, July 8, 2022, armed bandits are fighting for the occupation of territories in the municipality of Cité soleil. This crisis has already caused the death of close to a hundred people, dozens of wounded and close to a thousand displaced people. According to several people living in the commune and its surroundings, this situation is due to the confrontations between the rival gangs “G pép” and “G9”. As a result, the population is deprived of the basic necessities that are inherent to their functioning and survival.
This armed conflict is not without consequence on the rest of the capital and the country. So we witnessed two (2) major phenomena: First, hundreds of displaced persons fleeing the Cité Soleil area, which increases a wave of internal migration that already affects different regions of the country. Then, considering that the Varreux terminal is located in the area of Cité Soleil, which serves to supply certain gas stations in the capital, it is no longer possible to proceed with the distribution of fuel, which leads to an increase in the price of petroleum products on the national market. This scarcity has in turn caused the increase in public transport prices and waves of protests in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince. However, it is worth noting that this fuel shortage has persisted for some time on the national market.
Indeed, faced with this situation, the state authorities have not yet taken any decision to stop this bleeding. Once again, the Collectif Défenseurs Plus is worried about the future of the country which is sinking into a political and institutional instability. He calls on the state authorities to take responsibility in the face of these chaotic events going against international human rights regulations. The silence of the government in place is long. Many areas do not know peace anymore, but are rather at the mercy of armed groups. This is the case of Martissant, Pernier, Croix-des-Bouquets, Canaan, Cité Soleil…
The Haitian population has the right to security and the protection of the State in accordance with the constitutional and conventional provisions. The Defenseurs Plus Collective calls the Haitian population to peaceful mobilization in order to demand respect for their fundamental rights and the return to constitutional order in the country.
